Overview

Pine is the most commercially important softwood genus (Pinus), comprising ~120 species worldwide and the dominant construction lumber in North America and much of Europe. Pine is lighter, softer, and less dense than hardwoods like oak, but grows fast, machines easily, takes nails without splitting, and is well-suited to structural framing, plywood, and mass-market construction. Density varies widely by species and growing conditions.

Softwood vs Hardwood

"Softwood" and "hardwood" are botanical classifications (gymnosperm vs angiosperm), not direct measures of hardness. Longleaf southern yellow pine (Janka ~4000N) is harder than many hardwoods, while balsa (a hardwood) is one of the lightest woods. Pine density varies from 350 (white pine) to 650 kg/m³ (dense southern pine) — choose the grade for the load.

Not Durable Outdoors Without Treatment

Pine sapwood (which comprises most commercial lumber) is not naturally decay resistant — it will rot in 2-5 years in ground contact. Always use pressure-preservative-treated pine for exterior, ground contact, or damp locations. For naturally durable outdoor wood, use cedar, redwood, white oak, or tropical hardwoods.
