Gasoline Floats on Water

With a specific gravity of ~0.75, gasoline is less dense than water and will float on top of any free water in storage tanks. This is important for tank sump management: water collects at the bottom and must be drained to prevent corrosion and fuel quality issues.

Octane Rating

Octane rating measures resistance to engine knock (auto-ignition under compression):

Flammability Hazard — Class IA

Gasoline is one of the most flammable common liquids. With a flash point of -43°C, it forms ignitable vapor mixtures at any normal ambient temperature. Even cold weather produces enough vapor to create an explosive atmosphere. All electrical equipment in gasoline handling areas must be explosion-proof (Class I, Division 1 rated).

Environmental Considerations
