More Energy Per Liter Than Gasoline

Diesel's higher density (~840 vs ~750 kg/m³) gives it about 12% more energy per liter than gasoline despite similar energy per kilogram (~43 vs 44 MJ/kg). Combined with diesel engine higher thermal efficiency (40-45% vs 25-30% for gasoline), diesel vehicles achieve 25-40% better fuel economy.

Cold Weather Behavior

Diesel contains paraffin wax that crystallizes at low temperatures — the dominant winter operability issue:

Pumping & Pipeline

Flash Point Difference From Gasoline

Diesel's flash point above 52°C (vs -43°C for gasoline) means diesel does not form ignitable vapor at normal room temperature. You cannot ignite diesel with a match in open air at 20°C — it requires a wick, high temperature (compression ignition), or atomization. This is why diesel is much safer to store and handle, though leaks should still be addressed promptly.
