Overview
Lightweight concrete uses lightweight aggregates (expanded shale, clay, slate, or pumice) or is foamed (air entrained) to achieve lower density than normal weight concrete — typically 1200-2000 kg/m³ compared to 2400 kg/m³ for normal weight. It reduces dead loads in buildings and provides improved thermal insulation while maintaining adequate compressive strength for many structural and non-structural applications.
Types of Lightweight Concrete
| Type | Density Range | Strength | Primary Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structural lightweight | 1600-2000 kg/m³ | 20-50 MPa | Structural floors, bridges, precast |
| Moderate strength | 800-1400 kg/m³ | 7-20 MPa | Fill, blocks, panels |
| Insulating (foam) | 300-1200 kg/m³ | 0.5-10 MPa | Thermal insulation, void fill |
| Aerated (AAC) | 400-800 kg/m³ | 2-7 MPa | Autoclaved blocks, panels |
Mechanical Properties (structural lightweight, 1800 kg/m³)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 1,800 kg/m³ (112 lb/ft³) |
| Compressive Strength | 20-35 MPa |
| Tensile Strength | 1.5-3 MPa |
| Young's Modulus | 10-20 GPa (lower than NWC) |
| Thermal Conductivity | 0.7 W/m·K (~half of normal weight) |
Lower modulus means lightweight concrete is less stiff and exhibits greater elastic deflection, but creep and shrinkage characteristics are comparable to normal weight with proper design.
Applications
- High-rise buildings: Lightweight concrete on upper floors reduces total weight and seismic loads
- Bridge decks: Reduces superstructure dead load by 20-30%, allowing longer spans or smaller girders
- Precast panels: Lightweight precast wall panels for faster erection and reduced structural frame loads
- Floor/roof fills: Low-density fill over metal deck or to level surfaces
- Insulating concrete: Foam concrete for roof insulation, geotechnical fill, fire protection
- Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC): Precast blocks and panels for residential construction (Europe/Asia)
- Marine/offshore: Low density provides buoyancy in offshore platform structures
Key Design Considerations
- Aggregate source: Properties vary significantly with lightweight aggregate type; verify supplier data
- Internal curing: Pre-soaked lightweight aggregates release moisture during curing, improving cement hydration and reducing shrinkage cracking
- Shear strength: Typically 70-85% of normal weight concrete shear capacity; adjust design accordingly
- Thermal performance: Lower thermal conductivity (0.5-1.0 W/m·K vs 1.5-2.0 for NWC) — better insulation
- Fire resistance: Lightweight concrete performs better in fire due to lower thermal conductivity and higher moisture content
- Cost: Lightweight aggregate costs more than gravel; total structure cost may be lower due to smaller members/foundations
Summary
Lightweight concrete (density 1800 kg/m³ structural) offers 25% weight reduction and better thermal insulation than normal weight concrete while maintaining useful structural strength. It is particularly valuable in high-rise construction (reduced dead load), bridge decks, and precast elements. Insulating grades (lighter still) serve thermal and fill applications.
